Determining How Much Cloth You Need
Cloth comes in a width of 59”. Use the table below to determine how many strips of cloth must be sewn together to form your cover:
Cover Width | Number of Strips Needed |
---|---|
between 1′ and 4’11” | 1 |
between 4’11” and 9’8″ | 2 |
between 9’8″ and 14’5″ | 3 |
between 14’5″ and 19’2″ | 4 |
between 19’2″ and 23’11” | 5 |
For example:
-
- If you want a cover measuring 8’ wide x 12’ long, you would need 2 strips, so order 2 x 12’ = 24’ of cloth.
- If you want a cover measuring 12’ wide x 20’ long, you would need 3 strips, so order 3 x 20’ = 60’ of cloth.
- If you want a cover measuring 21’ wide x 30’ long, you would need 5 strips, so order 5 x 30’ = 150’ of cloth.

EMP Cloth
EMP shielding cloth is an excellent way to protect larger items, such as cars, trucks, generators, motorcycles, or solar panels. It can also be used to wrap hard-to-cover items, such as red dot sights and lasers. With a PhD in electrical engineering, I was fortunate enough to have the equipment to test more than two dozen brands of shielding cloth. In the end, I identified one cloth that meets all these criteria:
-
- Good shielding protection
- Easily sewn
- Durable
- Safe to handle
- Won’t tarnish or rust
- Low surface conductivity
- Reasonable cost
The cloth is made with nearly invisible stainless steel fibers and feels like a lightweight denim. It can be sewn by hand or with a sewing machine. The material is durable and safe to handle, and doesn’t contain high levels of silver or nickel. Also, it has low surface conductivity, meaning that it can be grounded very easily — usually by just allowing it to drape onto the ground or concrete floor.
Sizing Car/Truck/Motorcycle/Generator Covers
When measuring your car, truck, motorcycle, or generator, be sure to measure the widest part and to include 6″-12″ of cloth lying on the floor all the way around. This ensures that it will be well grounded and shielded. Note that since the width of the cloth is approximately 59″, you will need to sew several strips together to form large covers (see table above for determining total length). If you have questions, please contact me for assistance before ordering.
Note that for an additional charge, I can have the cloth cut and sewn prior to shipping. This way you receive a cover ready to put over your vehicle. See videos below for details about conductive car covers.
Sizing Solar Panel Covers – To determine the correct size for a solar panel, carefully measure the length, width, and thickness of the panel. You can either fully wrap the solar panel on all four sides like a Christmas package. Or you can lay the solar panel on a well-grounded floor (such as in the garage) and drape the cloth over like a protective tarp. Note: This is meant to protect solar panels that are disconnected from the charge controller and being kept in storage.
To order, use the “Cloth by the Linear Foot” button above.
Cost of Gun Optic Covers – a single 1′ x 59″ strip of cloth works wonderfully as a cover for red dots and laser sights (e.g., EOTECH, etc.) that are mounted on a rifle or handgun. Simply wrap the cloth around the receiver and tie to secure (see video below). Another option is to buy 3 feet and wrap the entire weapon lengthwise.
Caution on Purchasing
As you can tell, conductive cloth is expensive. The material for a generator cover might cost $300-$600, and a car cover around $2,000. For that reason, if you’re uncertain about using this cloth, I strongly advise that you order a one-foot sample prior to placing a large order. All sales are final, as I have no way of returning unused cloth. Note that EMP cloth provides about 30 dB of shielding (97% field reduction). While that’s perfect for protecting a car or generator, it won’t block a cell phone signal (which requires 99.999% field reduction), so don’t buy it for that purpose. We have anti-tracking pouches that offer that level of shielding.
Caution-Shock Hazard! Conductive cloth will conduct electricity! Keep away from electrical outlets or other sources of electricity.
